When Empire Meets Nationalism.  Power Politics in the US and Russia, Ashgate, 2009

This innovative study presents an in-depth political and sociological analysis of the internal power politics and imperial forms developed by the Russian neo-eurasianists and the neo-conservatives in the United States. It traces the growth of nationalism and the concept of 'Empire' in relation to the ideologies and foreign policy of both Russia and the USA.

Beginning with a genealogy of the two movements, the authors present the intricacy of imperial rhetoric and nationalist ideologies in modern states compared with the distinctive definition of Empire as a politico-historical form. The extent to which these ideas have shaped the foreign policy of Russia and the USA is then related to events in Central Asia, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The analysis of each case provides a better understanding of the imperial character of these foreign policies in relation to their nationalist foundations.

The combination of political theory and geopolitics makes this cutting-edge research a must read to all interested in the evolving discourse surrounding Empire.

A l’heure du retour de la Russie sur la scène internationale, l’idée d’empire connaît un égal renouveau chez des intellectuels entendant influencer le pouvoir, qu’il s’agisse de néo-conservateurs à Washington et de néo-eurasistes à Moscou. L’analyse de la tradition politique dans laquelle s’inscrivent ces derniers révèle des empires qui ne disent pas leur nom et démasque le nationalisme derrière la rhétorique impériale. Une étude géopolitique approfondie établit ainsi la convergence entre le programme de ces intellectuels et la politique étrangère de deux puissances qui dessinent l’avenir de l’ordre international.

Les néoconservateurs américains face à l'islam, UniversCités, 2005.

On a beaucoup parlé des néoconservateurs. A tel point que très souvent, on a oublié de les lire, comme on a omis d’expliquer leur importance trop souvent mise en avant dans une logique conspirationniste ou sensationnaliste, facilement réfutable. Cet ouvrage vise à combler ce manque dans l’analyse de ce qui est effectivement l’une des mouvances politiques essentielles de l’après guerre froide aux Etats-Unis. L’auteur, Didier Chaudet, président d’Euro-Power / Europe Puissance, concentre son analyse sur l’approche néoconservatrice de l’islam et de l’islamisme. Loin des partis-pris partisans, il s’appuie avant tout sur la lecture des prolifiques auteurs néoconservateurs, seul moyen de comprendre effectivement leur logique. Grâce à l’épreuve des sources, il est possible de fournir une approche détaillée et cohérente de la politique voulue par ces derniers au Moyen-Orient et dans l’ensemble du monde musulman, ce qui permet de mieux comprendre leur impact sur la vie politique américaine actuellement. Les leaders d’opinion européens et les simples citoyens soucieux face à la tournure des affaires internationales seraient bien inspirés d’apprendre à connaître ces idéologues, à qui l’on doit déjà, au moins en partie, le problème irakien, qui pèsera profondément sur notre sécurité collective dans les années à venir.
